PVC stands for Polyvinyl Chloride. PVC shrink film was most commonly used until it was replaced by polyolefin (POF) shrink wrap a few years ago. There are several reasons for this.
1. Common disadvantages of PVC shrink packaging - sealing strength, storage problems
Plasticizers in PVC Shrink become brittle in cold conditions and wrinkle in hot conditions, affecting the seal and the strength of the plastic.
Polyolefin shrink wrap also does not contain any plasticizers, so temperature is not an issue. Polyolefin can be stored in a wide temperature range and will not harden or soften in different environments like PVC shrink film.
2. Hazardous sealing by-products
PVC shrink wrap also releases small amounts of hydrogen chloride into the air and deposits carbon on the sealant. Proper ventilation is required when sealing PVC shrink wrap.
Polyolefin shrink film produces less odor when sealing because its material does not contain any chlorine. Therefore, the film does not generate by-product hydrochloric acid gas.
3. Health and Safety Issues
When PVC is heated, it releases hydrochloric acid gas. Therefore, PVC poses a hazard to the health of factory workers during production and to the public during incineration or decomposition.
Many countries have banned the use of PVC. Brands that take corporate and social responsibility seriously are also banning the use of PVC in their product packaging. This is an important consideration for brands. Some stores have limited products in PVC packaging, such as Walmart.
4. Maintenance cost
PVC can leave carbon deposits on the sealant. This leads to regular maintenance to keep the sealer running consistently.
